Filomena Nunes receives Inspirational Woman of the Year Award

Filomena Nunes, managing director for the FRIB Theory Alliance and professor of physics, received MSU’s 2017 Inspirational Woman of the Year Award in the Professional Achievement category.

Administered by the MSU Center for Gender in Global Context, the award highlights women who demonstrate integrity, leadership, quality performance, integrative and inclusive action, and influence on campus and in the community.

“I feel honored and grateful to receive this recognition,” said Filomena . “You cannot imagine all the kind words that the award generated. Most times we just plow through our to-do list without waiting for words of encouragement and it makes a huge difference to know that our efforts are appreciated by those around us.”

The selection committee stated that “it is remarkably evident that Dr. Nunes has made significant contributions to the FRIB, her field of study, and all women in STEM. The committee was impressed by her impact on MSU’s culture of excellence, but also the impact that Dr. Nunes has had globally.”

This year’s award honorees are, in each category:
Professional Achievement: Dr. Filomena Nunes, Managing Director for the FRIB Theory Alliance and Professor of Physics, MSU National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory and Department of Physics and Astronomy
Community Engagement: Sophia Koufopoulou, Instructor, Department of Sociology
Culture of Empowerment: Dr. Denise Troutman, Associate Professor in Linguistics and Writing, Rhetoric and American Cultures

“I do hope this award will also serve as an inspiration to the bright young women facing the many challenges of a career in physics,” said Filomena. “These women are a true inspiration to me.”

FRIB Laboratory Director Thomas Glasmacher said, “Congratulations to Filomena on receiving this award. She is very deserving of the honor, and her leadership, commitment, and accomplishments should serve as an example to all of us at the FRIB Laboratory.”
